Around the world, women entrepreneurs are driving innovation, creating jobs, and transforming communities. Yet, their stories often remain untold, overshadowed by systemic challenges and barriers that hinder their growth. This photo series, “In Their Element: Women Transforming Business“, seeks to change that narrative by highlighting four remarkable women who have overcome obstacles and risen to success with the support of We-Fi and its Implementing Partners. Each of these women exemplifies resilience, creativity, and the power of entrepreneurship to drive positive change.
Through these captivating images and personal stories, we offer a glimpse into the transformative journeys of these trailblazers. From renewable energy solutions in Kenya to groundbreaking tech innovations in El Salvador, these women are not just building businesses—they are empowering their communities and paving the way for future generations. Their journeys underscore the importance of investing in women-led enterprises and the profound impact it can have on local economies and global development.
Mary Nyambura – CEO, Ecocharge Ltd. (Kenya)
In Kenya, Mary Nyambura’s company, Ecocharge Ltd., is tackling environmental challenges head-on by repurposing agricultural waste into biomass briquettes. These eco-friendly, affordable alternatives to traditional fuels power homes, schools, and businesses across the country. Despite setbacks caused by unpredictable weather, Mary’s optimism and skills—enhanced through the Sourcing2Equal, an IFC program funded by We-Fi—have propelled her business to produce over 20,000 tons of briquettes annually. Her journey showcases the power of determination and strategic networking.
“Sourcing2Equal really helped me professionalize my business,” Nyambura says.
“I learned essential skills, realized I needed a full-time accountant, and networked with other women to better understand how to work with large corporations.”
Eva Muraya – Founder & CEO, BSD Group (Kenya)
Eva Muraya’s entrepreneurial journey began with a vision of illuminating Africa’s potential through strong branding. As the founder of BSD Group, she has built a successful brand advisory agency that serves high-profile clients across East Africa. With support from the Sourcing2Equal Program, Eva secured a contract with a multinational corporation, enabling her to create new jobs and invest in technology. A staunch advocate for women in business, she co-founded the Kenya Association of Women Business Owners and launched the “Top 100 Brands Loved by Women in Kenya” survey to amplify women’s voices.
“I know firsthand the importance of strong women, and this is a time to reflect on the milestones women have achieved. It is also a time to teach younger women that they can be anything they want, with hard, smart work.” added Eva.
Iliana Benitez – CEO, Vertex Studios (El Salvador)
In El Salvador’s growing tech ecosystem, Iliana Benitez is breaking ground with Vertex Studio, a company specializing in gaming and augmented reality. Her work has attracted clients like Meta and Lucasfilm, positioning her business as a global player. Iliana credits her growth to the IDB Lab’s WeXchange initiative, which connected her with mentors and investors. Beyond her business, she founded Hermanas Tech to empower Salvadoran women in tech, proving that innovation and inclusivity go hand in hand.
“The future is what you make, wherever you are,” she says.
Estela Mixco – Founder, Coffee Plant Nursery Ave Fénix (El Salvador)
From humble beginnings, Estela Mixco’s coffee plant nursery, Coffee Plant Nursery Ave Fénix, has grown into a thriving business. Inspired by El Salvador’s coffee heritage, Estela produces high-quality coffee plants while empowering her community. Through the WE3A program, she refined her business model and expanded her market connections. By employing local families and women, Estela’s venture is not just about growing coffee but also about cultivating resilience and opportunity.
“Including women in my project was a personal satisfaction,” she says. “These women are pillars in their families, and I am proud to have them as part of my team.”
