We-Fi and IsDB discuss support to women entrepreneurs in fragile situations

A delegation of the We-Fi Secretariat recently visited the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and its private sector arm ICD. Discussions focused on support to women entrepreneurs in fragile and conflict-affected countries. Implementation of the BRAVE Women program has started in Yemen, under very challenging circumstances, where women entrepreneurs receive training and funding on a matching grant basis. The IsDB and ICD will implement soon the BRAVE Women program in two other countries to improve the potential of women’s entrepreneurship in key economic sectors. Read More

Women-led start-up boosts math learning in Pakistan

Maheen Adamjee and Lina Ahmed, the driving forces behind the women-owned start-up Dot & Line, recognized an opportunity when they were discussing the low learning outcomes of Pakistan’s 30 million school-going children. Overall, unsatisfactory learning results are the main reason why an estimated two-thirds of them attend private after-school tutoring, largely an informal sector in the country. Read More

We-Fi Regional Summit Calls for Urgent Public and Private Sector Action to Support Women Entrepreneurs in West Africa

The first Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi) West Africa Regional Summit took place on April 17, 2019, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Organized by We-Fi in collaboration with the World Bank Group, the African Development Bank, and the Islamic Development Bank, the Summit brought together heads of state, leaders of multilateral development banks, key We-Fi government representatives, private sector executives, and women entrepreneurs to discuss concrete ways to expand opportunities for women-led small and medium-sized enterprises in West Africa. Read More

The Women, Business and the Law Report 2019: A Decade of Reform was announced by the World Bank on February 27, 2019.  The report measures how laws affect women throughout their working lives through an index taking into consideration eight important categories ranging from how laws and regulations impact women’s pay to freedom of movement to constraints on women in starting and running a business. Germany signs Agreement for EUR 50 Million Contribution to We-Fi

World Bank Chief Executive Officer Kristalina Georgieva and German Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Norbert Barthle, signed an Agreement for Germany’s EUR 50 million contribution to the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi) on October 14, 2018. The signing took place on the margins of the World Bank – IMF Annual Meetings in Bali, Indonesia.

We-Fi Event on “Building a Better World for Women Entrepreneurs”

The inaugural meeting of We-Fi’s Leadership Champions was held in New York on September 25, 2018 on the margins of UNGA opening week. The event was organized by the We-Fi Secretariat in partnership with the United Arab Emirates Government (one of the founding donors to We-Fi), and it was well attended and impactful. It brought together the Leadership Champions with other high-level representatives from We-Fi sponsoring and recipient countries; We-Fi Governing Committee members; other We-Fi stakeholders including the MDBs, UN Women, W20, ONE Campaign, and Vital Voices; and other key influencers.  Read More
